The Mania Thebaia project at Düsseldorf’s Schauspielhaus theatre assembles four Greek tragedies into a cycle. With their visions of these plays, four directors from four different countries give us at the same time their responses to the condition of the world we live in. in one and the same setting, created by Jannis Kounellis in a diffused factory in the eastern part of Düsseldorf. Theodoros Terzopoulos, director- manager of the Attis Theatre in Athens and Chairman of the Theatre Olympics, is in charge of the performance of the Bacchae. Tadashi Suzuki, for whom his native city has set up the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center, is the director of Oedipus Rex. Valery Fokin, head of the Meyerhold Center in Moscow, directs Seven against Thebes. And Polish-born Anna Badora, artistic and administrative director of the Schauspielhaus, hosts the project and gives us her version of Antigone.
