JOCASTA

IN ATTIS THEATRE IN THE FRAMES OF DOCUMENTA 14.

Attis Theatre participates in documenta 14 (Athens- Kassel) with the performance Jocasta post mortem by Jannis Kontraphouris (new version), in direction and stage installation designed by Theodoros Terzopoulos. Performing Sophia Hill and the director.

It was the wish of Jannis Kontraphouris (1968-2007) that Jocasta (2007), completed shortly before his death, would be staged by Theodoros Terzopoulos. The play Jocasta, a meditation on human suffering, uses the margins of speech to built a nightmare. With the relics of a glorious past in her hands, the protagonist disturbs a world established on atrocious crimes.

"ENCORE"

(30 years of Attis Theatre).

The new production of Attis Theatre, directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos

Premiere: November 25th, 2016

ENCORE

Encore
, based on the poetry of Thomas Tsalapatis, comes to complete the trilogy that began with Alarme and continued with Amor. At the core of the trilogy lies the same theme: conflict as the mythical origin of creation and time. The dense power that the meeting of two bodies on stage releases and the sadistic consumption of one by the other, at the end annihilates both of them. The two performers, with a smile as engraved by a razor, whisper "encore, encore, encore", signifying the continuity of Attis Theatre, which celebrates thirty years since its foundation.

AMOR, DIRECTED BY THEODOROS TERZOPOULOS, IN ATTIS THEATRE
FROM NOVEMBER 25TH, 2015 TO JANUARY 17, 2016

Amor, one of the latest atop performance, highly appreciated by the audience and praised by the critics, will be repeated in Attis Theatre fora limited number of performances, from November 25th.  Amor is a scenic composition based on a text written by Thanasis Alevras and directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos.
The scene is a place of an auction, where everything - the roles, the theatre accessories, the emotions, the memories, the parts of human body - is being sampled, cost and purchased. The prices are affected by the fluctuations of the stock market.
The actors humorously observe the contemporary situations, they interpret extreme behaviours of persons manipulating and being manipulated by authority, in an era of crisis. However, everything is undermined by the promise of Amor, which could function as a drive force of humanizing.

REVIEWS

"... Theodoros Terzopoulos is creating a kind of theatrical 'poetry' [...] offering the unique, visually impeccable world of Amor".
Louiza Arkoumanea, To Vima (15/12/2013)

"Terzopoulos is offering a proposal for the end of the world and its new beginning through a post-Brechtian distancing and a deeply sarcastic, but also intensely humanitarian approach".
Dimitris Tsatsoulis, Eleftherotypia (20/1/2014)

"In 50 minutes and only with two performers- Antonis Myriagkos in a unique interpretation and luscious Aglaia Pappa- the internationally acclaimed director creates a magnificent performance- visual manifest for the "present" of the crisis" and "forever" of theatre.
Ileiana Dimadi, Athinorama (19/12/2013)

"Theodoros Terzopoulos achieves the absolute with only a few materials, creating a concussive elegy for the lost humanism- or in other words, a hope fo its recovery".
Eleni Petasi, click@life (18/1/2014)

"A performance in dialogue with the contemporary era- and at the same time transceding it. [...] Amor is like a thunder before the lightning".
Stella Charami, tospirto.net (12/12/2013)

"A political comment, contructed impeccably".

AMOR

ATTIS THEATRE'S NEW PRODUCTION
PREMIERE: DECEMBER 6TH

Amor is Attis theatre's new prodduction; scenic composition based on a text written by Thanasis Alevras and directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos. Amor will premiere in Attis Theatre on December 6th, 2013.

The scene is a place of an auction, where everything is being sampled, cost and purchased: the roles, the theatre accessories, the emotions, the memories, the parts of human body.

Attis Theatre participates in the International Festival Vie Scena Contemporanea, in Modena (Italy), presenting two performances. Within the frames of the festival, Theodoros Terzopoulos will offer a three-day workshop in Corte Ospitale Rubiera for the professional actors of Teatro Emilia Romagna, in Modena. Theodoros Terzopoulos will be assisetd by his partner, Savvas Stroumpos.

A few words about Dancer.
Dancer is perhaps the most renowned among the, so called, greek poems written by Arendt. The main theme of Dancer is the conflict between two powers that concludes to total destruction. They could be interpreted as the logic, at one hand, and the instinct, at the other. Thus, we could say that in the Dancer we have the concentration of the deep core of ancient tragedy. In Attis theatre's performance this conflict is interpreted by the actor Tasos Dimas as the striving of an aged and exhausted body, in the threshold of senility, with the last but omnipotent indications of energy. That same energy that used to be a reason of joy and ecstasis, has now been transformed into a hostile factor, since it obstructs the body from dying. The director Theodoros Terzopoulos also participates in the performance.

Translation: Torsten Israel
Direction: Theodoros Terzopoulos

Dancer: Tasos Dimas
Narrator: Theodoros Terzopoulos

A few words about Alarme
Alarme, one of the atop performances of last years in Athens, had been greatly appreciated by the audience and highly praised by the greek and internationsll press.
Alarme, based on the correspendence between Maria Stewart and Queen Elizabeth, deals with the love-hatred relationship between the two Queens that were never met in real life, in order to comment upon the always current issue of authority.

He particularly mentioned that he would like "Iocasta" to be staged by Theodoros Terzopoulos in his ATTIS theatre. The director fulfilled the last will and dedicated the performance to the memory of the author.
«The play belongs to the tradition of many contemporary plays, that go back to the ancient greek myths to deal with heroic figures in a profound and inevitably anti-heroic era. With ruins and remains of memories, Iocasta constructs her own final nightmare and disturbs the order of a society based upon monstrous crimes."
The international premiere of the play was given in Moscow on October 2011, whether Iocasta has been also presented in Athens, Perm and Genova.

THEODOROS TERZOPOULOS IN THE NATIONAL ARTE ACADEMY IN ROME

After the triumph of Prometheus Bound in Taiwan, the next activity of Theodoros Terzopoulos and Attis Theatre abroad is a workshop in the National Drama Academy of Rome. Within the frames of the project «Grandi maestri della scena teatrale” the Nationalle Accademia dell' Arte Silvio D'Amico invited Theodoros Terzopoulos for a 15days workshop, from April 11th to April 25th, on Prometheus Bound, with the undergraduate students of the Academy. An "open class" will be presented the last day of the workshop, which will be attended by the professors of the Academy, directors and actors.  The stable collaborators of Theodoros Terzopoulos, Savvas Stroumpos and Paolo Musio, will be his assistants during the workshop.

In the press conference, which was held one month ago in Rome, the President of the Academy, Lorenzo Salveti, said: «It is a unique chance for our sudents the opportunity to work with one of the greatest contemporary masters».(http://www.accademiasilviodamico.it/interno.asp?id=37&id_dettaglio=421)

During the same press conference, which was organised by the Greek Embassy in Rome, in collaboration with the Nationalle Accademia dell' Arte Silvio d' Amico, it was presented the program of activities and collaborations of Theodoros Terzopoulos and Attis Theatre in Italy the following two years (2014- 2015): Alarme, with Sophia Hill and Aglaia Pappa and the Dancer by Erich Arendt with Tasos Dimas will be presented in Vie Scena Contemporanea Festival, in Modean, on May- June 2013, Phaedra by Marina Tschvetayeva, with Alla Demitova will be presented in Festival In Una Notte d’ Estate, in Genoa, on summer 2013, while Theodoros Terzopoulos will direct a tragedy with an international cast in Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione, in Modena.

PROMETHEUS BOUND

ATTIS THEATRE PRESENTS PROMETHEUS BOUND IN TAIWAN

ON MARCH 22, 23, 24 AND 30

The performance Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos, will be presented in Taiwan invited by the 5th International Festival of Arts, the National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center in Taipei and the Kaohsiung Cultural Center. The performance is joined by an international cast of Greek, Turkish and German actors. It is the first time that a Greek theatre performance is presented in Taiwan.
Prometheus Bound will be presented in the National Theatre of Taipei on March 22, 23 and 24, within the frames of the  5th International Festival of Arts, a young and very active festival that hosts international productions, alongside with new performances by Asian artists. This year's edition of the festival includes, besides Attis Theatre, the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and other theaters and artists from France, Latin America and Asia. Prometheus Bound will be presented in Kaohsiung Jhihde Hall Cultural Center on March 30.
Within the frames of the festival, Attis Theater will offer two three-days workshops for Taiwanese professional actors and young directors, while Theodoros Terzopoulos will deliver lectures about his working method and his approach on ancient greek tragedy.
The performance will be interpreted by Sophia Hill, Meletis Ilias, Antonis Myriagkos, Savvas Stroumpos, Alexandros Tountas, Nikiforos Vlassis, Kerem Karaboga and Maximilian Lowenstein.

«In the contemporary world the myth of Prometheus has been put at the fringe of History, while History has been put at the fringe of Memory and Memory at the fringe of Time. Time has been frozen and Prometheus moves in it with a blur memory, recyclable material of a desert space. He utters fragments of his experience as a nightmare from the future that defines the present implacably. He speaks about "the end of an end without ending" in a dead landscape. His plead is not heard, since only desert surrounds him. His obsessive speech reflects the short circuit of the body and the meaning. He suffers from the syndrome of the gulf. He converses with the oversights of his loneliness, exiled at the theatre scene. He converses with the fragments of himself on the broken mirror. His rage and his crying for his repeated defeat is everlasting.».

"THREE SONGS FOR OPHELIA"

«THREE SONGS FOR OPHELIA»
IN ATTIS THEATRE
ON APRIL 5, 6

"Three songs for Ophelia" is a music performance composed by Panagiotis Velianitis. Panagiotis Velianitis is renowned at the field of contemporary avant- garde music and close collaborator of the director Theodoros Terzopoulos since 1991. He has composed the music for many performances of Attis Theatre («Bacchae», «Perses», «Oedipus Rex», «Heracles enraged», «Mauser», «Alarme» etc).

In «Three songs for Ophelia» the poetry of three upmost poets of 20th century, K.P. Kavafis, Arseni Tarkofski and Heiner Muller, is transformed into a music performance and is interpeted by the internationally leading russian singer Natalia Pschenitschnikova. Natalia Pschenitschnikova is highly acclaimed for her interpretations in works of contemporary music avant-garde composers, like Giacinto Scelsi and John Cage.

The confinement and the suicidal obsessions emerge in the poem "Walls" by Konstantinos Kavafis.
The conflict of eroticism and creativity with the fatalistic acceptance of the destiny emerge in the poem «The first dates" by Arseni Tarkofski.
Finally, the ultimate liberation through death is the subject of  «Ophelia» at the 2nd and 5th part of «Hamletmachine» by Heiner Muller.

Those three ontological themes inspired the composer to create three songs for the soprano Natalia Pschenitschnikova. Each poem is interpreted in its original language (greek, russian and german), in order to maintain the style, the ethics and the prosody.

Particular (recorded) sounds- animal roars, war sirens and sounds of machines - are combind with purely electronical sounds, creating a sonic environment in constant interaction with the human voice. The sound elaboration is live through the interactive application Opticoacoustic Reactor, wich was created by the composer in MAX/MSP & Jitter environment. Moreover, Panagiotis Velianitis is one of the first greek composers working with digital music technology, like the UPIC system by Iannis Xenakis.

Theodoros Terzopoulos supervises the performance, while the costume of Natalia Pschenitschnikova is designed by LOUKIA.

ALARME AT ATTIS THEATRE

ANOTHER 3 PERFORMANCES
ON  FRIDAY, MARCH 1st, at 21.00
ON SATURDAY, MARCH 2nd, at 21.00
ON SUNDAY, MARCH 3rd, at
19.00

ALARME in Attis Theatre will be prolonged for three more performances, since the last performances were sold-out. The three performances will be performed on Friday 1/3, Saturday 2/3 and Friday 3/3.

ALARME, one of the atop performances of last years is being presented for third season in Attis Theatre. ALARME has been famously appreciated by the audience and highly praised by the greek and international press.

ALARME directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos is a scenic composition based upon the correspondence between Maria Stewart and Queen Elisabeth A'. An international tour will follow up the performances in Athens, since ALARME has been invited by international festivals.

ALARME based on the correspondence between Maria Stewart and Elisabeth A' deals with the love-hatred relationship between the two Queens that were never real met, in order to comment upon the always current issue of authority.

"The performance deals with the fatal conflict of the two women. Behind this fatal conflict, lies a constant desire for fusion. This fusion attracts but also frightens them, since it means the abolition of their individuality. The two women fight each other and invoke violence, in order to defend themselves against this desire for fusion. The conclusion is that behind the war lies an absolute love that frightens them more than the hatred and the violence. This dynamism, that remains unsaid to the end, drives them to the total destruction". (from the program notes of the performance)

REQUIEM

REQUIEM

Requiem

"In the middle of the empty scene, an actor stands all alone; his body has turned into a multi-rythmic machine, confronted with the elementary natural powers, like gravity. In his eyes sparkles an unsearchable distance; his mind is lost in a space from where rise elusive images, fragments from stories, violent blasphemies, expressions of a desperate and clear voice, in the attempt to create the labyrinth in which he is being lost, in intense adventure of the thought".

"The play belongs to the tradition of many contemporary plays, that go back to the ancient Greek myths to deal with heroic figures in a deeply and inevitably anti-heroic era. With ruins of words and remains of memories, Iocasta constructs her own final nightmare and disturbs the order of a society based upon monstrous crimes".

MAUSER- ATTIS THEATRE- ATHENS

The performance Mauser by Heiner Müller and directed by Theodoros Terzopoulos, that was awarded by the audience and praised by the critics had completed a cycle of sold-out performances in Athens. The performance was dedicated to Heiner Müller, teacher and collaborator of Theodoros Terzopoulos and to Maria Beikou, the dear friend and fighter of the National Resistance, who participated in the performance. On Fall 2012 Theodoros Terzopoulos will direct Mauser with Polish actors in Grotowski Institute, within the frameworks of the international project Masters in Residence.

Due to the great success, with which the performance Eremos was met in London (at 12/10) and the celebrating review by Michael Billington in Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2011/oct/13/il-deserto-review), Eremos returns in London for two performances on November 14th and 15th.

HOMAGE TO T.TERZOPOULOS IN BERLIN

23 - 24 September 2011

International Conference
organised by the Dept. of Theatre Studies, Freie Universität Berlin

at
Griechische Kulturstiftung Berlin, Germany

Dionysus in Exile
The Theatre of Theodoros Terzopoulos

For more than thirty years, Theodoros Terzopoulos has been producing a deeply political theatre, characterized by a persistent resistance against established norms and perceptions of body, space and meanings. In their performances, Terzopoulos and the Attis Theatre employ disconcerting
tactics, seek to destabilize and create ambivalence.
Terzopoulos stages the representational instability as an uprooting and aims at a theatre in wandering that deprives the objects from their trivial positions and settings and mobilizes feelings of inquietude. As the familiar is absent, significations become suspended allowing the development of multifocal and centrifugal arrangements. In this sense, Terzopoulos’ theatre is in exile.
The symposium will explore the wandering of Terzopoulos and his theatre in space and time, in order to describe the way in which the director and his theatre destabilizes the given and displaces forms and significations, to think about the »aesthetics of the exile« as a political act of entrenchment of the unfamiliar.

IOCASTA-MOSCOW

IOCASTA - MOSCOW

FESTIVAL SOLO
THEATRE CENTER NA STRASTNOM, MOSCOW

Saturday October 1st, 2011

Theatre Center Na strastnom
Time: 19.00

Yannis Kontraphouris
IOCASTA
(World premiere)

Direction- Scenic installation: Theodoros Terzopoulos

Iocasta: Sophia Hill
Narrator:Theodoros Terzopoulos

"The play belongs to the tradition of many contemporary plays, that go back to the ancient Greek myths to deal with heroic figures in a deeply and inevitably anti-heroic era. The individuality of this play consists in the fact that the mythic frame is only at the margin, something that reinforces the universality of the suffering personae. With ruins of words and remains of memories, Iocasta constructs her own final nightmare and disturbs the order of a society based upon monstrous crimes. Iocasta comes to the light to deliver to the audience her miserable glory. She declines her royal burdens and she descents to the abyss of her devastating life. At the time of her descent, even the natural forces are present and accommodate the definite declination of the heroic world. The language of the play is poetic and fragmental. The grammatical and syntactic derangement contributes to the certainty of an imminent destruction. The play, with the one word phrases, functions as a countdown to the end. Denuded by the royal tumult, Iocasta, who only wished for a silence, listens to the hymns of her sanctification. And like a saint, she offers her body like a Communion to the mouths of her enemies."
